Greetings,

Welcome to the October edition of the Continuing Connections newsletter. It was wonderful meeting so many of you at Davis Farmland on September 30th. What a great day! 192 people from our Adoption Choices families enjoyed a fun-filled fall day. Dale, Raquel and the two of us could not stop talking about what a fantastic time we had and how great all of your families are. Thanks to Jewish Family Service of Metrowest for making the day possible.
Thanks to all of you who shared pictures of that day and other great days with us. You'll see pictures of Lily Malloy, Connor Matthews, Katherine Fitzpatrick, Morgan Pierce, Rachel and Caroline Clemson, Lily Aisenberg, and Katie Gregory in this month's newsletter and more to come in the newsletters to follow.
A big Welcome Home! to Isabella Inez Schow- Corral (born 8/12/07). Isabella joins her mom and dad, Laura Corral and Peter Schow.

Speaking of how great your families are, we've decided to devote the space this month to all of our families rather than just one. Thanks to all of you who responded to our email requesting you tell us something great about your family. Here are some of those responses:

Our family is great because everyone helps! At 10 months, Elisabeth is the only one without a chore, but she is practicing her walking so that she can help too. Riding on Ooma's hip, she likes to help stir! Chet, 22, Robbie, 11, and KC, 3, all pitch in, too. Whether it's bringing the hamper downstairs, or cooking with Mom, setting the table, or loading the dishwasher, or even putting the napkins into the hamper, everyone helps make our family successful! Kirsty and Lee E.

Something special about my family is our sense of humor - even Gabby falls over laughing at silly things we all do together! Stephanie and Jono L.

My family is great because we are getting to explore life together. It's really remarkable how you look at things differently thanks to a very inquisitive 4 1/2 year old! It kind of makes you step back and see what's really important in life! Claire J.

Something great my 3.9 year old kid did was tell me that she'd help me fall asleep by telling me a story about Peter Pan and Captain Hook and she wouldn't make it too scary. Debbie B.

Something great my kid did was her grandma took her to the store and said she could buy anything, and she ended up buying a Happy Birthday balloon for Mommy because it was my birthday! And she is only 2 ½! My family is great because we love to give family hugs. Before daddy goes to work each morning we all get together for a group hug. Jean A.

Our family is great because our two children light up our lives and warm our hearts. Annette J.

Our children are special with their infectious giggles that entertain us day after day, mischievous grins that are signs of what is to come, precious smiles to warm our hearts, sparkling blue eyes full of hope and dreams-and most importantly, the love that we share as a family. Adrienne and David J.

Our family is special because: We love Mexican food - LOVE IT! All of us (well, not sure if Olivia likes it yet but we are sure she will). And we could eat guacamole for any meal, any day! We are a multi-racial family. Girls out-number boys by 5:1 in our family (if you count female felines). Our children are both named after their first maternal grandmothers. Our combined age is 73 years, 2 months. All of our baby dolls have brown skin, just like our daughters. We all give really great hugs. We have great friends who we love and a terrific extended family who loves us. We all love to read; anytime, anywhere, we all love a good book. Our oldest daughter thinks applesauce is a dessert (as does her dad who should know better!) Adoption has changed our lives, all of them, for the good and the bad. We hope that as parents we can make most days good, and be there when the bad ones come. We love our children and their first families and everyday crave that they know how very much. Lori D.

November is National Adoption Awareness Month! Here are some ideas on how to observe it:

· Light a candle in honor of your child's birth parents.
· Celebrate your child's heritage. Visit www.adoptivefamilies.com/heritage for ideas.
· Write a letter of appreciation or criticism to your local media - newspaper, television, radio for the way they portray adoption.
· Give thanks for your family. Show your appreciation for each other by creating a special family ritual.
· Educate yourself on the positions your elected officials hold on adoption. Write a letter letting them know your thoughts. If you are unsure of the name of your U.S. Representative, visit www.house.gov/writerep for assistance.
· Donate one of your favorite adoption books to your child's classroom or your local library.

· And don't forget about National Adoption Day!
National Adoption Day began eight years ago as an effort to raise awareness of the thousands of children in foster care waiting to find forever families. 2006 marked the first time that National Adoption Day was observed in all 50 states plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. On November 17th, Massachusetts will be celebrating its fifth National Adoption Day. Eight locations throughout the state will be legalizing adoptions for children from foster care and holding celebrations. See www.nationaladoptionday.org for more information.

The 18th Annual Seas the Dream gala will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2008. This is the agency's major fundraiser and helps us continue to provide so many of the incredible programs you read about in this space. This year's honorees are Al and Judy Bernstein, both past-presidents of JFS of Metrowest.
One of the signature pieces of the Seas the Dream gala is the incredible food offerings generously donated by area restaurants. These restaurants not only donate to a very worthy cause, they receive the invaluable publicity brought about by 400-plus attendees sampling their restaurant's delicacies. And because restaurant representatives actually come to Seas the Dream to offer their finest, they have the opportunity to meet the attendees and other restaurateurs as well.
If you know anyone who owns a restaurant and might be interested in being part of our exciting evening, please let us know. If you frequent an establishment on a regular basis, we'd love to hear from you. We appreciate your help in soliciting restaurants to be part of Seas the Dream 2008! Contact Lucia at lcarballo@jfsmw.org for more info.
