Greetings,

Welcome to the summer edition of the Continuing Connections newsletter. We hope you're enjoying the summer so far - think of us during your family vacations!. We love to see pictures so please send them in. All of your pictures help to make our newsletters so personal and inviting.
We will not have an August e-newsletter; rather, we will be sending everyone a sampling of our newsletter by hard copy. Look for it in your mailbox sometime in August. This way, those who don't receive our e-newsletter will be able to see a copy. Our e-newsletter will continue with the September edition.
A very special "Welcome Home!" to Parker Lee Keeler (born 5/20/07), who joined the family of Brooke and Jeffrey Keeler on 5/24/07.
This issue includes pictures of Lily Malloy, Connor Geshwiler, Hannah Abrahams, TIm and Liam Walsh, and Parker Keeler. Thanks to their families for sharing them with us.

"Please be aware that the wait for referral is now over 19 months from log-in-date and the wait is expected to lengthen. It is difficult to accurately predict how long the wait will get......."
This is merely a portion of the latest recorded hotline update message for the China program that our agency, CHSFS, provides weekly.
For us, calling the Children's Home Society and Family Services China Adoption Program hotline became a weekly Monday ritual. You are provided with this hotline number once your dossier is sent to China and your wait for a referral begins. Our log-in-date was August 23, 2005. At the time our dossier was sent to China, the wait was six months. We started other rituals, including a vigilant monitoring of the CCAA website for the monthly updates with the official cutoff dates for referrals. We watched the wait creep from 6 months, to 7 months, to 8. We then started to get nervous as the wait continued to grow. At a meeting in April 2006, we were informed that the coming Monday's hotline message would indicate a wait of 12 months. At this point we felt that if we were told that the wait would be 15 or even 20 months, definitely, we would be better with that. We could plan on that. But this increase in wait time with no idea what would happen from month to month was an absolute rollercoaster ride, and it started to make us both queasy. Our wait ended on November 2, 2006 when ..........................

It's time to fill up that beach bag with books for summer reading! Here are some of our recommendations for children's books about adoption:

It's O.K. to be Different by Todd Parr, ages 6 and up
Using bright colors and a simple, repetitive text, Todd Parr shows us that differences are "okay." "It's okay to come from a different place." "It's okay to be adopted." "It's okay to ask for help."

Tell Me Again About the Night I was Born by Jamie Lee Curtis, ages 2 - 8
The girl in this book asks to hear her birth story, over and over again. She hears about the excitement of the phone call, the plane trip, her parents' reactions upon seeing her for the first time, etc. This book captures the joy parents feel about meeting their child. Young children will enjoy the warmth of the text as well as Laura Cornell's fanciful drawings.
