Lifeline is an emergency response service for elderly, disabled, or ill people who spend a lot of time alone at home and who want to preserve their independence. Subscribers receive a battery-powered button and a telephone communicator. Simply by pressing the button, the subscriber can make outgoing calls to the Lifeline Response Center, where trained monitors are on staff 24 hours a day. This service provides reassurance to elders and their caregivers.

In the event of a problem, the monitors call the subscriber's friends or neighbors and ask them to stop by the subscriber's home; if necessary, emergency services are called. The monitors will call back to ensure that appropriate help has arrived. It is also possible to use the button to take all incoming calls over speaker phone. In 2003, Jewish Family Service of Metrowest became the first community agency in the Metrowest Massachusetts area to become a Lifeline provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
I've never fallen before. Why do I need a personal response button?
Lifeline is insurance in case an emergency should arise. We hope you never have reason to use it in an emergency situation; the system is there to help you if you do.

I only want to use the button for the convenience of taking calls over speaker phone. Is that an acceptable use?
Certainly. Lifeline is designed to allow you to answer calls over speaker phone. You will still have access to the full range of personal response services, should you ever need them.

I am physically unable to push a button. Can I still subscribe to Lifeline?
A variety of switches are available for people who cannot press buttons.
