Greetings,

holiday book

Happy Spring!  Yes spring is coming and you won't be inside forever! Get ready for spring, make a Purim* mask and enjoy the sunshine. Purim is coming Tuesday March 10th and the first day of spring is 10 days later on March 20th! Bake special Purim sweets, snuggle up on the couch with your kids with a good book or check out upcoming community events when you want to connect with others.
Play groups are forming now.  Contact Stacey  to be connected with other Kulanu families.

*Purim is a historical holiday which celebrates Queen Esther, a hero who saved the Jews of Persia (present day Iran).  It is celebrated by dressing up in costumes, parades, eating and sharing hamentashen, (three cornered cookies in the shape of the villain Hamen's hat) and making lots of noise when reading the Purim story whenever Hamen's name is mentioned.

3 ways to celebrate Purim!

Discover Judaism1.    Have a costume party to

       celebrate this fun holiday!
2.   Tell the Purim story
3.   Attend a Purim Carnival!

Easy Hamentashen  Recipe for Busy Families!

hamentashenIngredients
1 (18.25 ounce) package moist yellow cake mix

1 cup all-purpose flour  (you may need to add more if dough is sticky)

2 eggs

2 tablespoons water (you may need to add more if dough is stiff)

1 cup fruit preserves, any flavor  or chocolate chips
   Makes 2 dozen hamentashen

Directions

1.     Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease cookie sheets.
2.     In a large bowl, mix together the cake mix and flour. Stir in the eggs and water to form a stiff
dough. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/8 inch thickness. With a water glass,
cut into 3 inch round circles and place 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets. Place a
teaspoon of filling into the center of each cookie and pinch the sides to form a triangle. Moisten
with water if necessary to make the edges stick.
3.     Bake for 6 to 8 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned. Allow cookies to cool for
1 minute on the cookie sheets before removing to wire racks to cool completely.

Read a Book for Purim!

Celebrate bookAt the Franklin Public Library:

Celebrate! A Book of Jewish Holidays
by Judith Gross

Read what this mom has to say about this book:
This book was a great introduction to Jewish holidays for my 3-year old. I have been introducing her to the basics of the major holidays as they come along over the past year, but the sweet, simple explanations and pictures in this book help her remember and begin to understand."

                        by Sylvia Rouss
"My two-year-old daughter LOVES this book! She really enjoys joining in for the repetitive lines, "Mother!" and "Spiders spin webs!" The book also does a good job teaching about the preparation for the holiday, e.g., baking hamantaschen,(three cornered cookies in the shape of the villain Hamen's hat)  and making a costume. The boy in the story makes a grogger (Purim noisemaker) out of a paper plate and buttons and my daughter and I followed the suggestion and made the same ones ourselves and they were a big hit during megillah (scroll on which the Purim story iswritten in Hebrew) reading. I highly recommend it." M.B.G.

Peg shares her story

Pegand LeahI can honestly say that being involved with Kulanu has been life changing for my daughter and I.  I was not raised Jewish, but my husband, Scott, was. We are raising our daughter, Leah, in the Jewish faith.  Kulanu has given me a sense of community and friendship.  My daughter goes to Torah Tots [which we found through Kulanu] and loves her friends she has met there.  I am very grateful for finding this connection and look forward to learning and growing through the years with other Kulanu friends.

- Peg Wilson, mother of Leah, age 4

Purim is a time or remembering and rejoicing.  You can have fun at home or have even more fun by joining a community celebration.  Children (and some adults) come to the synagogue dressed up in costumes to listen to the Purim story being read out loud.  It is the one time of year that it is ok to  make lots of noise in the synagogue! Check out all the events happening in March! All families are both alike and different.  Share your story what makes your family special and the rewards and challenges of raising Jewish children.
Be happy!  It's Purim!
