When Sheila’s mother Ethel sometimes couldn’t remember her own daughter’s name, Sheila was concerned. When Ethel’s neighbor called to say she’s found Mom all confused standing out in the evening rain by someone else’s mailbox, Sheila was worried. But when Ethel left the burner on the stove on again and caused what was luckily only a small fire in her kitchen, Sheila knew she needed help…
She called JFS of Metrowest….and found it didn’t have to be so hard to be a good daughter. In short order, a geriatric care manager from JFS of Metrowest met Sheila and they went to Ethel’s house together. There, the daughter was embarrassed by the mess, with clutter everywhere and cat litter all over the place. Worse, Ethel didn’t recognize her, had a noticeable limp and was suffering from dehydration. The JFS manager did a comprehensive assessment, made the necessary arrangements for specialists to see the elderly woman and set up a plan to save not one, but two lives. So today, Ethel is shining. True, she has dementia. But with professional expertise, a loving daughter and a certified nurse assistant from JFS of Metrowest who stays with her, Ethel remains safe in her own home. And Sheila? Now she sleeps at night…isn’t distracted at work…doesn’t shiver every time the phone rings…and can, like Ethel, relish the quality mother-daughter time still ahead of them.At JFS of Metrowest, we believeit shouldn’t be so hard to be a good daughter…or a frail elder. And thanks to a caring community – made up of people like you -- our geriatric care management and homecareprograms are rejuvenating and improving the quality of people’s lives every day.
